Starting March 26, average speed control will begin operating on several road sections in Latvia. New control sections will be established on the Liepaja Highway (A9) from Apšupes to Tilti, as well as on the state road Ekabpils - Rezekne - Ludza - Russia border (A12). This year, a total of 17 new average speed control sections are planned to be implemented, which will function on various roads across the country.
Control will be carried out using automated equipment that records the time taken for a vehicle to travel through a specific road section. This equipment, installed at the beginning and end of the controlled section, will also check for valid insurance, an up-to-date technical inspection, and payment of the road fee.
Statistics show that in the already existing 16 average speed control sections, there has been a decrease in the number of traffic accidents, including serious ones. The installation of the new equipment is funded by the Latvian Bureau of Motor Insurers. The control equipment will be provided by SIA Reck, and the total contract amount is 1.99 million euros.
