The Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia has approved new traffic rules that will come into effect on April 1 of this year. In particular, the changes relate to stricter requirements for cyclists and electric scooter riders. Now, electric bicycles are prohibited from riding on sidewalks, which is aimed at protecting pedestrians, especially children and people with disabilities. A unified registration system will be introduced for all forms of micromobility, which should enhance safety and reduce the risk of conflicts on the roads. Additionally, the rules regarding people with disabilities are changing: they will now be able to obtain parking cards based on actual needs rather than just age. Public transport will also receive priority with new traffic lights, and fines will be introduced for causing disturbances to it. In the event of traffic accidents, the maximum speed for agricultural tractors will now be 60 km/h. These changes, developed by the Ministry of Transport and other agencies, are aimed at improving the safety of road users.
